There are a few habits you need to develop and keep in order to maintain a healthy smile. Many of us learned about these habits when we were children–but we are going to review some tips to help you get the most out of your oral hygiene routine!

Brush: Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. Some people find it helpful to set a succession of 30-second timers, one for each quadrant of the mouth, to ensure a thorough clean. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your enamel and gum tissues from damage. Don’t brush too hard; this will also damage your tissues.

Floss: Floss your teeth every day! This will only take about two to three minutes per session. Floss cleans the places that your toothbrush can’t reach, such as in between teeth and behind back molars. It doesn’t matter if you floss before or after you brush, as long as you do both.

Mouthwash: Some people choose to include mouthwash as part of their oral hygiene routine. If you choose to do this, be aware: not all mouthwashes are created equal. Be sure and buy therapeutic mouthwash–that is, mouthwash that actually kills bacteria, rather than simply masking the scent of halitosis.
