Patients that choose to move forward with dental implants wonder how painful the procedure will be. Implants are a permanent solution that feels and looks natural in the mouth. At Smile Design, we want our patients to get the smile they have always wanted. Our customized treatment plans work for each patient’s needs, and we answer any and all questions every step of the way.
Patients that have missing, broken, or cracked teeth are great candidates for implants. Overall the procedure is not painful, and many patients say that having a tooth pulled is more painful compared to their implant procedure.
To keep our patients comfortable, we use local anesthesia, and the gums are numbed around the implant area. As part of our evaluation process we will ensure each patient has enough bone present in the jaw. If needed, bone grafting can be done which adds an extra step but helps to provide that needed support for the implants.
After your implant procedure you may have the following:

  • Minor bleeding that should stop after a day or two.
  • Swelling or minor bruising around the implant area or face.
  • Some pain or sensitivity around the implant area.

Overall the process for implants takes anywhere between 4-6 months. During the recovery, we may recommend pain relievers or antibiotics to help with the healing process.
If patients notice any pain, swelling, or bleeding that does not subside or gets progressively worse we encourage them to contact our office right away. Soft foods are recommended, and we encourage patients to stay away from foods or drinks that may stain your teeth.
With good oral hygiene dental implants can last upwards of 25 years or a lifetime. The pain associated with dental implants can be kept at a minimum, and this makes dental implants a great choice for patients seeking a beautiful smile.
